Law enforcement officers often do not get a chance to testify in court until a critical case comes to trial. Be prepared to present your and your K9’s actions in the best light in court. We offer courtroom training to handlers via our Courtroom Training class. This is an 8 hour course where four handlers will send in a case to be reviewed prior to the class and then be examined directly and cross examined in a real courtroom setting. Elizabeth Norton, a 25+ year veteran prosecutor who has handled hundreds cases, including homicide, narcotics and K9 cases, will show the students what pitfalls to be expected and how to handle them gracefully on the stand. All additional attendees sit as “jurors” and are encouraged to ask questions of the instructor and participate in the process.
In addition, Elizabeth Norton is available to review your case prior to going to court. You can send all relevant reports, all audio/video recordings available in your case as well as your training and certification records for your K9 and Ms. Norton will provide expert direction as to the strengths and weaknesses of your case, what cross examination you can expect and how to make sure you are making the best impact on the judge or jury in your case. All reports, records and recordings are held confidentially and will be returned to you at the conclusion of the course.
Finally, Ms. Norton is available to consult with deputy district attorneys (DDA) in any case involving a K9. Ms. Norton can suggest lines of questioning and troubleshoot areas that may cause concern. In addition, Ms. Norton can pinpoint areas where a defense attorney may cross examine so that the DDA can be fully prepared. Finally, if the defense has hired an expert, Ms. Norton can assist in preparing the DDA to cross examine that expert.
