State v. Schilling (2019) 9 Wn. App. 2d 115

Tracking/Trailing Evidence

Handler testified that PSD alerted to a “fear” scent given off by individuals who were experiencing fear, such as in the case being chased by LE. Court held valid opinion because PSD was trained to detect human odor as well as a “fear scent.” Handler also testified that human scent is made by humans that humans shed skin cells continuously and those skin cells along with freshly disturbed ground is trackable by PSD. This opinion was not challenged on appeal because the defendant chose a defense that he was not the perpetrator in the chase in question.
